Heritage is the legacy of places, items and cultures that we value from the past and which we wish to maintain for future generations. Heritage gives our community a sense of place and informs us about who we are, and how our society has developed over time. It includes Aboriginal cultural heritage, significant landscapes, buildings, monuments and evolved culture, and is irreplaceable once lost.

Heritage Items and Heritage Conservation Areas

We have many heritage items and areas which tell our story, from early settlement to the development of agriculture, local industry and the arts.

Heritage studies and history

Heritage Studies for the Clarence Valley cover the former Copmanhurst Shire, Grafton City, Maclean Shire, and the combined Ulmarra and Nymboida Shire areas.

Aboriginal Heritage

Aboriginal heritage has been handed down through stories, dances, myths and legends and is embodied in landscapes and places as well as objects and is formally protected by legislation.

Non-Indigenous Heritage

The Clarence River was integral to the historic growth of the valley and its hinterland. Towns and villages nestled on the banks of the Clarence River are closely linked to the days of river transport.

Museums and Historical Societies

The Clarence Valley has 8 local historical societies /museums with a wealth of information and exhibits relating to our local area and may be able to assist with research.

Heritage Assistance Grants 2023

Local heritage grants are to assist owners and community trustees in the maintenance, conservation and interpretation of heritage items and places of heritage significance in Heritage Conservation Areas identified in Clarence Valley Local Environmental Plan 2011. A variety of projects have been assisted over previous years.
