Frequently asked questions

How should I place my bins for collection?

To make sure your bins are collected safely and efficiently:

  • Kerbside positioning: Place bins on the kerb with the wheels facing your property.
  • Allow space: Where possible, leave at least 1 metre between bins and keep them clear of obstacles such as parked cars, trees, fences or power poles.
  • Keep bins visible: Make sure bins can be clearly seen from the road and are not hidden behind objects. Do not place bins on the road, as this can create hazards for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
  • Do not overfill: Keep lids closed and avoid overfilling. Overfilled bins may not be collected.

When should I put my bins out?

Place your bins out the night before your scheduled collection day. Collection may start early in the morning, so putting bins out in advance helps avoid missed pickups.

What can I put in each bin?

Only place items in your green, yellow and red bins that match what is shown on the bin lid.

If you're unsure:

Collection trucks are fitted with cameras that record bin contents. If incorrect items are found, you will be notified. A three-strike process applies for repeated contamination.

What if my property has access issues?

If your property is on a narrow street or has limited access, particularly during busy periods like Christmas and Easter, contact Council or our waste contractor, JR Richards, on 1800 33 55 99 to arrange an alternative collection point.

What if I have a commercial bin?

Our commercial waste collection service is available to non-residential users including offices, shops and industrial premises.
