Statement from Laura Black - General Manager

Published on 20 May 2025

Following the events of recent Council meetings, I make this statement in support of all Aboriginal staff at Clarence Valley Council whose contribution I value and appreciate.

The recent weeks have been a difficult and emotional time for all staff here at CVC. As a team, we are defined by the way we treat each other. Our respect and acceptance of one another allows us to work/walk together as colleagues and friends. We celebrate our differences, and we do not condone discriminatory or racial remarks.

As a team, we work with care and respect on the sacred ground of the Gumbaynggirr, Bundjalung and Yaegl People. We diligently deliver services to our communities and contribute to a future that is culturally safe. As one, Council staff are working towards a community where the proud and distinct Cultures of our three Nations are visible, embraced, and we aim to reflect this in our work. What is said by others does not define us, as staff we define our organisational culture by our actions and in this respect the voice of our employees is that “We celebrate and value the contribution of our Aboriginal staff”.

I stand beside the staff of Clarence Valley Council when I say that the Cultural fabric of the communities we live and work in is something we acknowledge and appreciate.

It is easy to criticise Council staff, but I ask the community to consider that most of us live in the Clarence Valley, we are your family, friends, neighbours, and community. We are a proud workforce, supporting each other to deliver the best service possible to all our communities within the Valley. Our Aboriginal staff members are a significant contributor to how we do this work, as we invite them to guide us in ensuring that we are always walking softly on country.
