Background

Stage 2 of the Maclean Road Upgrade builds on the Stage 1 works completed in 2025 near the Maclean Pool and Argyle Street intersection. Together, the two stages improve roads, pedestrian access, and connections across the town centre.

Stage 2 is needed because Alexander Street, Stanley Street, and Short Street currently have uneven road surfaces, limited space for pedestrians, and poor connections between key destinations. These issues affect safety, accessibility, and how people move through the area.

The upgrade will address these issues by improving the road and adding a shared path for walking and cycling. This will make it safer and easier for people to get around, and support local businesses, residents, and visitors by improving access and street function.

Delivering the project in stages allows Council to coordinate with previous upgrades and reduce disruption by planning construction clearly and efficiently.

What are the benefits?

  • A new raised pedestrian crossing (Wombat crossing) will be installed near the carpark entrances of Maclean Bowling Club and the motel driveway to make it easier and safer to walk around the Maclean CBD.
  • New kerb and footpath will be installed to improve pedestrian access and connectivity between Alexander Street, Stanley Street, and Short Street and the town centre.
  • The road will be resurfaced with new asphalt, providing a smoother and safer drive for all road users.

Objectives

  • Upgrade and strengthen local roads to improve safety and functionality.
  • Provide a continuous, accessible shared path for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Improve connections between key destinations in the precinct.
  • Support local businesses and residents by maintaining access during construction.
  • Enhance the streetscape and usability of the Maclean precinct.
  • Reduce long-term maintenance needs through better design and construction.

This project is co-funded by Roads to Recovery and the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
